Spot Gloss and Gold Foil Design Requirements

Spot Gloss and Gold Foil Design Requirements

Two files are required for spot gloss and foil projects:

  • Print Layer - vector based PDF, saved in CMYK (gracol color flow recommended)
  • Element/Mask Layer - Vector based PDF recommended in black and white - the black parts of the design will be printed as your foil or UV/gloss element.
    • If you submit a file in raster then you may see traces of spot gloss or foil in areas you don't expect.
    • Save a raster file in 360 dpi. Zoom in 600% to delete traces of ink.

We often find that less is more. Price is based on coverage so we recommend avoiding large solid areas of the element. Here are a couple of other tips:

  • Spot and Raised Gloss: We recommend using different patterns and accents rather than using large solid areas. We do charge based on coverage.
  • Foil: Use these elements in isolation. Your print layer should print as if there are no foil elements at all. This is because we first print the CMYK print layer. Then we print the foil on top and there will be slight shifts in the artwork.
